SCALE: 9 sts to 1 in.

Jack Frost Fingering Fleece—3 1-oz. Balls

Cast on 68 sts. Work in rib pattern as follows:

Row 1 (right side)—P 2, * K 1, P 2; repeat from * across row.

Row 2—K 2, * P 1, K 2; repeat from * across row.

Repeat above 2 rows until piece measures 2 in., ending on wrong side, then work in pattern as follows:

Row 1—* P 2, slip next 3 sts to double pointed Needle, hold in back of work; K the next st, then bring the slipped sts forward and work them in rib of P 2, K 1; repeat from * across row ending P 2.

Rows 2, 4, 6 and 8—K 2, * P 1, K 2; repeat from * across row.

Row 3—P 2, * K 1, P 2; repeat from * across row.

Row 5—P 2, K 1, * P 2, slip next 3 sts to double pointed Needle, hold in back of work; K 1, then bring the slipped sts forward and work them in rib of P 2, K 1; repeat from * across row ending P 2, K 1, P 2.

Row 7—Repeat row 3.

Repeat above 8 rows until piece measures 4 in. in all.

HEEL: Knit 15. Place remaining 53 sts on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the 15 heel sts for 26 rows, ending with a purl row. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1—K 1, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 2; turn.

Row 3—K 2, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 3; turn.

Row 5—K 3, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 4; turn.

Continue working as given above until all sts are worked; there will be 8 sts on Needle, ending with K 7, K 2 tog.

Pick up and knit 14 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and work in pattern across the 38 instep sts.

Place the 60 sts just worked, on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the remaining 15 heel sts for 27 rows ending with a knit row. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1—P 1, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 2; turn.

Row 3—P 2, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 3; turn.

Row 5—P 3, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 4; turn.

Continue working as given above until all sts are worked; there will be 8 sts on needle, ending with P 7, P 2 tog.

Pick up and purl 14 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and work across row, keeping the 38 instep sts in pattern to toe (82 sts).

INSTEP SHAPING:

Row 1—K 20, K 2 tog., pattern over 38, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 20.

Row 2 and all even rows purl, keeping the 38 instep sts in pattern.

Row 3—K 19, K 2 tog., pattern over 38, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 19.

Row 5—K 18, K 2 tog., pattern over 38, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 18.

Continue decreasing as given above until 66 sts remain. Work even until foot measures 2 in. less than desired length, measuring from back of heel, ending on wrong side. Decrease for toe as follows:

Row 1—K 14, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 26, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 14.

Row 2 and all even rows purl.

Row 3—K 13, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 24, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 13.

Row 5—K 12, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 22, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 12.

Continue decreasing as given above until 26 sts remain. Weave tip of anklet tog. Sew back and sole seam.

Work other anklet to correspond.
