Sizes: 9 to 10½

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 2-ounces of Nylon or 3-ply Sock Yarn.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. No. 2 single pointed.
Two stitch holders.

GAUGE: 8 sts to an inch.

STARTING AT THE CUFF: Cast on 64 sts and work in rib­bing of k 2, p 2 for 2 inches. Now work in the following pat­tern: Row 1: K 2, * p 1, k 2, p l, k 4, repeat from * across row ending with k 2, p 1, k 2. Row 2: P 2, k 1, * p 2, k 1, p 4, repeat from * across row. Row 3: K 2, * p 1, knit 2nd st of the k 2 rib first, then knit first st, drop both sts from left hand needle together, p 1, k 4, repeat from * across row, ending with cable, p 1, k 2. Row 4: Repeat row 2. These 4 rows form the pattern. Work until the sock measures 4 inches in all.

HEEL: Knit 14 sts and leave on the needle; place next 36 sts for instep onto a st holder, place remaining sts onto a 2nd st holder. On the 14 sts work in stockinette stitch, always slipping the first st on a purl row for 24 rows, ending with a purl row.

SHAPING OF HEEL:
K 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 3, turn;
K 3, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 4, turn;
K 4, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 5, turn;
K 5, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 6, turn;
K 6, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 7, turn;
K 7, slip 1, k 1, psso, no knit 1, (8 sts).
With the same needle pick up and knit 12 sts along side of heel, knit the instep sts from st holder; take all sts from needle back onto a free st holder. Knit 14 sts from 2nd st holder and work in stockinette st for 25 rows, always slipping the first st on a knit row; ending with a knit row.

SHAPING 2ND HALF OF HEEL:
P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 3, turn;
P 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 4, turn;
P 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 5, turn;
P 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 6, turn;
P 6, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 7, turn;
P 7, p 2 tog, no purl 1, (8 sts).
With the same needle pick up and purl 12 sts along side of heel and work sts off st holder; working the instep sts in the pattern. NOTE: Hereafter work stockinette stitch at side of in­step, keep pattern on instep sts. Next row: Knit 20 sts, place a marker on the needle; work next 36 rows in pattern; place a marker on needle; knit last 20 sts. Next row: Work across row, keeping markers in place – purl 20 sts, pattern 36 sts, purl 20 sts.

GUSSET DECREASES: 1st dec: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker, work across instep sts, slip marker, k 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Next row: Work across in pattern, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 60 sts remain on the needle. Work in pattern until the piece measures 2 inches shorter than length needed (measuring from back of heel). Ending with the right side facing you.

TOE DECREASES: Work remainder of sock in stockinette stitch. Knit 15 sts, place a marker on needle, knit 30 sts, place a marker on needle, knit remaining 15 sts. Purl next row keep­ing markers in place. 1st dec: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker; k 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Repeat these last 2 rows until 24 sts remain on the needle. Bind off and sew across toe, having decreases at side. Sew sole and back seams. Make other sock the same way.
